Michael was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1956 and grew up in the Los Angeles, CA area and on Long Island, NY. I studied forestry at Paul Smith's College, NY and Oregon State University from where I received a Ph.D. I began working for the Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station in 1980. For the last 41 years my research has focused on increasing our understanding of the natural history and identification of truffles in forest ecosystems. My current main interests include biodiversity of truffle species in forests, and managing rare, sensitive and endemic macrofungi.
